Finishing Ovens

Custom Industrial Finishing Ovens for
Coating, Curing and Drying Applications

Blasdel Enterprises designs and manufactures custom industrial finishing ovens for paint, powder coating and other coating applications. Each system is engineered around the coating material, part geometry, production rate, temperature requirements and available floor space.

Our finishing ovens use electric infrared, gas catalytic infrared or high-velocity recirculated air. Batch, indexing and continuous conveyor configurations are available, along with integrated controls and material handling equipment.

Blasdel provides a standalone oven or incorporates the oven into a complete finishing system with conveyors, loading equipment, cooling tunnels or vestibules, and automated controls.

Oven configurations are customized based on your process, including vertical, horizontal, circular and casegoods-style arrangements with heaters positioned on top and sides.

Blasdel builds Class A ovens with control panels rated to meet UL 508A specifications.

Custom Finishing Oven Applications

Blasdel finishing ovens can be designed for:

  • Liquid paint curing
  • Powder coating cure
  • Primer curing
  • Varnish and protective coating cure
  • Paint and coating drying
  • Solvent flash-off
  • Moisture dry-off before coating
  • Preheating parts before painting or powder coating

Systems can process a wide range of substrates, including steel, aluminum, plastic, wood, glass, rubber and other materials.

Finishing Oven Heating Technologies

Electric Infrared Finishing Ovens

Electric infrared technology transfers heat directly to the product and coating rather than relying solely on heating the surrounding air.

  • Rapid heat-up and curing
  • Independently controlled heating zones
  • Precise temperature control
  • Compact oven footprints
  • Clean operation
  • Efficient energy transfer
  • Adjustable heat intensity for different products and finishes

Blasdel utilizes ceramic panel heaters, quartz panel heaters, Blasdel Coil-O-Rod Incoloy emitters and Blasdel ceramic generators in the medium-wave infrared spectrum. Gas catalytic emitters are also available in the long-wave infrared spectrum.

Gas Catalytic Infrared Finishing Ovens

Gas catalytic ovens combine flameless infrared energy with convection and are used for selected finishing and paint-curing applications.

  • Rapid temperature response
  • Reduced cure times
  • Independent heating zones
  • Effective heating of complex parts
  • Long-wave infrared energy with convection

High-Velocity Air Finishing Ovens

High-velocity or high-volume air ovens circulate heated air throughout the oven to provide controlled, uniform heating. All Blasdel ovens use PID temperature control, including systems controlled through a PLC.

These systems are well suited for:

  • Liquid paint curing
  • Solvent flash-off
  • Moisture dry-off
  • Lower-temperature finishing processes
  • Parts with complex shapes
  • Applications requiring heated air to reach recessed surfaces

Conveyorized Finishing Ovens

Conveyorized ovens are designed for continuous or indexed production lines. Every oven is engineered to achieve the required processing time and temperature based on the coating and production requirements.
Available material-handling options include:

  • Overhead conveyors
  • Belt conveyors
  • Chain conveyors
  • Powered roller conveyors
  • Indexing systems
  • Automated part loaders
  • Pick-and-place equipment
  • Custom product carriers
  • Integrated loading equipment

Blasdel has designed integrated infrared conveyor ovens for powder and liquid coating processes. Recipe controls can be incorporated into any Blasdel oven, including systems with PLC controls and stored production recipes.

Process Testing Before Final Design

When process testing is needed, Blasdel tests customer parts and coatings before quoting the oven. Testing prior to final design helps establish the process requirements. The completed oven is also tested before shipment and may be tested by zone when facility power availability requires it.
Testing can help determine:

  • Appropriate heating technology
  • Required cure temperature
  • Time at temperature
  • Heat-zone arrangement
  • Infrared emitter selection
  • Conveyor speed
  • Product spacing and orientation
  • Airflow requirements
  • Expected production rate

Finishing Oven Design Considerations

Blasdel typically reviews part dimensions and weight, part material, coating type and manufacturer, cure schedule, production rates, conveyor information, available utilities, floor-space limitations, loading and unloading requirements, exhaust and ventilation needs, and required controls.

FAQs – Finishing Ovens Page

Faqs Finishing Ovens Page

What is a finishing oven?

A finishing oven is an industrial oven used to cure, dry or heat liquid coatings such as liquid paints, lacquers, varnishes, stains, primers, inks and other liquid finishes. Finishing ovens use infrared heat or convection heat to achieve the required cure profile while maintaining consistent product quality.

What types of finishing ovens do Blasdel manufacture?

Blasdel designs custom finishing ovens for coating and finishing applications, including:

  • Liquid paint curing - solvent-based and water-based
  • Flash-off ovens
  • Primer curing
  • Lacquers
  • Stains
  • Varnishes
  • Inks

Every oven is engineered specifically for the customer's process rather than built from standard configurations.

Does Blasdel build custom finishing ovens?

Yes. Every Blasdel finishing oven is custom engineered around the product, coating process, production rate, required time and temperature, available floor space, utilities and material-handling requirements. Each system is designed to optimize heating performance, production efficiency and long-term reliability.

What heating methods are available?

Blasdel offers several heating technologies:

  • Combination infrared and high-velocity recirculated-air systems
  • Electric infrared
  • Gas catalytic infrared
  • High-velocity recirculated air

The appropriate technology depends on the product, coating chemistry, production rate, required cure schedule and available utilities.

What products can be processed in a finishing oven?

Blasdel finishing ovens can process a wide range of products, including:

  • Automotive components
  • Wheels
  • Aluminum extrusions
  • Appliance components
  • Architectural products
  • Aerospace parts
  • Construction equipment
  • Consumer goods
  • Custom-manufactured components
  • Industrial equipment
  • Steel fabrications

What is the difference between infrared and convection finishing ovens?

Infrared ovens transfer heat directly into the product and coating, allowing faster heat-up and shorter curing times. Electric infrared is high in energy efficiency. It heats the part four times faster than convection.

Convection ovens transfer heat to the air and the air heats the part. This is less heat transfer and less energy efficient compared to infrared technology.

Can a finishing oven be integrated into an existing production line?

Yes. Blasdel frequently designs ovens that integrate with existing production lines including integrating conveyors, robotics and material handling equipment. Custom layouts allow new equipment to fit within existing manufacturing facilities while minimizing disruption.

What industries use Blasdel finishing ovens?

Blasdel finishing ovens serve many industries, including:

  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Industrial manufacturing
  • Agriculture
  • Heavy equipment
  • Appliance manufacturing
  • Building products
  • Metal fabrication
  • Powder coating job shops
